The Pioneer Volunteer Firefighters Association (PVFA) is a benevolent organization dedicated to supporting the Pioneer Fire Protection District (PFPD), the Pioneer/ Indian Diggings School Districts and the community at large.
We have morphed from being a volunteer fire department when all members needed to have firefighting skills to an organization that is comprised of community member who chose to volunteer their time and who are committed to our relationship with the PFPD, the Pioneer PTO and the community at large.
First and foremost the PVFA is dedicated to support the PFPD and holds fund raisers (Crab Banquets) each year to provide needed additional funds that cannot be supported via the PFPD annual budgets. We also subsidize funds for reserve firefighters who are not paid employees of the district, but are paid on a daily stipend and allows for more firefighters to be working on a daily basis. The PVFA also provides funds for Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs or more commonly referred to as turnouts), equipment upgrades, medical services and whatever is needed to fill in budgetary gaps in the PFPD, which support the communities of Coyoteville, Fairplay, Grizzly Flats, Happy Valley, Mount Aukum, Omo Ranch, Sandridge and Somerset.
Secondly, we support the Pioneer/ Indian Digging School Districts and provide monies from our Crab Banquet fundraisers to help enrich our students’ educational experiences through the purchase of items that are not in their budget.
We also do the following:
- Organize an annual Easter Egg Hunt and Pancake Breakfast for the community – at no charge, donations accepted.
- Have a benevolent fund that is used to help families in need.
- Each year provide a Christmas Party for children in the district.
- Have long term, “hand shake” leases at a nominal fees with the PFPD for the fire houses in Grizzly Flats and at Willow Station on Grizzly Flat Road.
- Hold a Fire and Wine Fundraiser in October.
We have a group of volunteers, called the Red Shirts, who help out at our community events. If you are interested in joining the PVFA as a member or a Red Shirt, please use the website to contact us.
We are always looking for new members and new Red Shirts. Take a chance with us – you might be surprised at how much you benefit from joining us.
We are constantly looking at ways to improve our support for the PFPD, the schools and the community. One of the items we are working on for the future is to set up an structure to provide information during critical fires, such as the Sand Fire. This is still in the works, but is very important to us.

We meet on the second Monday of the even months (February, April, June, August, October and December) at 6:00 p.m. The location is Station 38 on Mt. Aukum Road. Please feel free to join us in our meetings. Agendas will be posted on the website on the Friday before each meeting.
The PVFA is a 501(c)(3) registered charitable organization and donations made to the PVFA may be deductible under current IRS regulations.
